Held up in rear - headway into midfield 2 out - no impression from last (inquiry into running and riding; jockey said it was gelding's first run of the season and his instructions had been to drop in - settle his mount and get into a nice jumping rhythm before mounting a challenge in home straight with an emphasis on keeping him balanced as he is a big long-striding horse; he added gelding raced keenly in early stages and mindful of his early exertions and long straight at Uttoxeter - he wanted to jump the 3rd last before asking mount to go after leaders; he passed beaten horses in straight but did not gain on principals - thereby attaining best possible position; he further added gelding had made a respiratory noise passed the winning post - a fact he had reported at scales; trainer confirmed instructions and that ride had accorded with them before adding he was satisfied with ride which was resuming since having bled from nose at Ludlow; their explanations were noted; vet had nothing to report)(op 33/1)
