Slowly away - always behind (inquiry was held into running and riding; vet had nothing to report; jockey said his instructions were that - as gelding is big and backward - he was to keep him balanced and to educate him whilst trying to achieve best possible placing on this his first run; he said gelding missed the break and was slowly into stride so he gave him time to find his feet by which time he was detached from the field; he added that - as he was outpaced and running green - he was only able to gain ground slowly and once closer to the back markers ended up in the kickback; he maintained he had asked gelding for his effort rounding final bend and as he was making little progress and was finishing one-paced - elected to ride gelding hands and heels to line; he added that he had spoken with trainer after the race and had recommended that a step up in trip might benefit gelding;trainer's rep confirmed instructions and that he was satisfied with ride given that gelding had lost so much early ground; their explanations were noted)(tchd 12/1)
